Everyone needs an editor! No, really––I mean EVERYONE! Editing is not just about grammar, spelling and sentence structure. Content editing also looks at what’s included, where and recommends an order and flow at the paragraph and chapter level that can really make a difference. Your book may start out with a long bland introduction and suddenly shift into passion and enthusiasm that leap off the page in the third or fourth chapter. Content editing provides edits that will bring that energy to the opening and help to address issues of pace and tone throughout the manuscript.
Dialogue is notoriously hard to get right so that it sounds like natural speech. Content editing will help craft punchy dialogue and flag gaps in character development. It will also find and suggest how to address any holes in your story or argument. Finally, most writers labour way past the natural ending of the story. Content editing will help you find that sweet spot, and can take a manuscript from good to great and make it publication ready!
Suggestions are made through comments in the margins, but a content edit aims to make changes right in the manuscript itself to minimize your effort afterwards. That said, all edits are made through ‘track changes’ that you can accept, reject or modify as you choose. It’s your book.
I have experience editing non-fiction wellness titles, memoirs, literary fiction, genre fiction and young adult fiction.
Though, I look at each project individually (usually after a manuscript evaluation), Content Editing usually costs about $4.00 per 100 words.
