Book Coaching & Content Editing

Are you a content expert looking for support in bringing forth a book? Do you have a story to tell, but no idea where to start? Book coaching takes you on a journey through mapping out the chapters, finding your voice, writing through scene and simply getting through your first draft. Have a manuscript already? Everyone needs an editor––take your story from Blah to Woah!

If you have a draft or book already, I strongly recommend getting a Manuscript Evaluation. This could be the best $300–$500 you’ll ever spend. I read your full manuscript and provide a comprehensive analysis of its readiness for a readership, whether you want to self publish or look for a publisher. The evaluation will give you input on changes and additions you can make yourself before the editing process, as well as establish whether your manuscript needs a light Proofread or a thorough Copy Edit to take it from good to great!

A writing coach can quite simply take you from ideas to actual pages. And let’s face it––writing is intense, personal, and usually involves moments when you feel like what you’re producing is not at all what you hoped it could be. Coaching helps you avoid getting stuck and sticking your half-written ‘baby’ in a drawer for 10 years.

Having worked extensively in the Yoga and wellness field and written a number of time-honoured Yoga coursebooks, I have a flair for helping content experts and those with a story to tell bring structure to their vision of writing a book. I take you on a journey through mapping out the chapters, finding your voice, writing through scene and simply getting through your first draft. And, having spent time on the initial structure of the book, making sure each chapter has a satisfying story arc, your draft will be in great shape for editing!

Stop thinking about writing and dive right in with a guide on the side!

Reach out to see if I’m a good fit for your project and to get an estimate depending on your needs!

You’ll discover:

  • What the core message of your book is
  • How your book might fit into the publishing market
  • How to break your ideas up into chapters that each have a satisfying arc
  • Where and how story fits into your non-fiction book
  • How to engage readers through scene and “show not tell”
  • Your natural voice, tone, pace and style
  • How to give space and importance to the good stuff and not skirt over valuable material
  • What fits within the scope of your book
  • How to come to a meaningful ending

You’ll be supported through:

  • Initial consultation sessions
  • Tips on the craft of writing
  • Scheduled check-ins
  • Motivation and tools to keep getting ideas into words on the page
  • Early assessment of the writing in the first few chapters
  • A final evaluation of how editing can benefit your final draft

Everyone needs an editor! No, really––I mean EVERYONE! Editing is not just about grammar, spelling and sentence structure. Content editing also looks at what’s included, where and recommends an order and flow at the paragraph and chapter level that can really make a difference. Your book may start out with a long bland introduction and suddenly shift into passion and enthusiasm that leap off the page in the third or fourth chapter. Content editing provides edits that will bring that energy to the opening and help to address issues of pace and tone throughout the manuscript.

Dialogue is notoriously hard to get right so that it sounds like natural speech. Content editing will help craft punchy dialogue and flag gaps in character development. It will also find and suggest how to address any holes in your story or argument. Finally, most writers labour way past the natural ending of the story. Content editing will help you find that sweet spot, and can take a manuscript from good to great and make it publication ready!

Suggestions are made through comments in the margins, but a content edit aims to make changes right in the manuscript itself to minimize your effort afterwards. That said, all edits are made through ‘track changes’ that you can accept, reject or modify as you choose. It’s your book.

I have experience editing non-fiction wellness titles, memoirs, literary fiction, genre fiction and young adult fiction.

Though, I look at each project individually (usually after a manuscript evaluation), Content Editing usually costs about $4.00 per 100 words.

Writing & Editing

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia and alongside working on a novel and volume of poetry, I offer book coaching and content editing services.

Having worked extensively in the Yoga and wellness field and written a number of time honoured Yoga course books, I have a flair for helping content experts and aspiring writers bring structure to their vision of writing a book, and offer practical support in establishing an approach to writing that can lead to a successful manuscript.

Though non-fiction wellness titles and memoirs are the water I swim in, I also have experience in editing literary fiction, genre fiction and young adult fiction. Everyone needs an editor. Content editing can take a manuscript from good to great and make it publication ready!
